Engaging with teenage girls

In 2006 boys were more likely than girls to meet the recommended levels of physical activity; with 70% of boys and 59% of girls reporting taking part in 60 minutes or more of physical activity on all 7 days of the previous week

Statistics on Obesity, Physical Activity and Diet:
England, January2008

The government recognises that teenage girls as well as boys need to be engaged in positive active lifestyles. We believe the MUSA can help to bridge the gap and entice more teenage girls into sport and play.

Provision for teenage girls is often overlooked and generally relies on the presumption that all girls prefer to be spectators. Traditional MUGAs don’t appeal to girls as they generally only cater for ball sports such as football and basketball, which tend to be dominated by boys using one goal end for unstructured activities.

"They don't really appeal to girls of our age and are usually used by younger boys."

"It's a great informal way to exercise and the equipment doesn't look childish, it's much more appealing to me and my friends."
